Serial ATA is basically an IDE cable, except a lot smaller and faster. So yeah, SATA is badass and IDE is obsolete.

Instead of this big, ugly grey ribbon cable, you get a small, fashionable red cable. Don't forget the power cable.

If you don't know what the SATA cable looks like, it's a small thing ribbon, colored red with two black plugs at each end. Picture time!

You forgot the important part: Yes it is possible to combine IDE (PATA) with SATA, but you need a converter like the one down below.

Or maybe you have a SATA plug on your mainboard then you only need the cable mekko showed you.

If you don't wanna get one of those and you don't have a SATA plug on your mainboard you prolly need a new mainboard, i wouldn't advice you to get a new harddisc b/c IDE is dying.

Post Re: Serial ATA HDD
if i remember right u got a duecore comp, wich mostly have a SATA connector anyway.

SATA vs IDE

Sata disks can have a transfer rate up to 1.5 Gbit/s, 3.0 Gbit/s
IDE mostly 133 MB/s

so for the speed SATA is way faster, but ofcourse it aswell depends on the speed of the disk aswell and how fast ur mobo is to transfer the data (atm 800 mostly, but can be higher, should be in the mobo specs)

and then how fast ur disk is (rpm) u got special game disks (raptor) that gets up to 10.000 rpm, but then again very pricy and not in big formats.

in short SATA will be the future for now and is alot faster then ATA

as for the cable, they dont deliver it with new disks and should buying it urself maybe in a local shop or so. (should be around 10 dollar max i think)

Thanks for the addition, Hidden, I completely forgot about those converters (seeing as I've never used one/don't trust anything that converts anything...)

Usually new motherboards come with all cables, including extra SATA cables (at least mine did), but yeah, they're relatively cheap online or at like Circuit City, etc.

also same as mekko how i think about converters, they mostly aint the best solutions to cover it.
i have seen many getting broke fast or slowing down (in this case) the HDD.

it probaly is the cheapest tho. but if u have the cash, get urself a mobo that can have sata ;p

Yeah I also wouldn't adivce converters just wanted to mention that it is possible to convert PATA to SATA. Converters always mean 1 more piece in your computer can get broken or slows everything down.
